The journey

The deep north is where Sri Lanka's story begins. Anuradhapura's colossal white stupas under monsoon clouds, the cave temples of Mihintale where Buddhism first arrived, and the brick-and-moonstone poetry of Polonnaruwa. This is a journey for those who want history told properly — slowly, and with respect.

Highlights

  • Ruwanweli Maha Seya stupa at golden hour — the world's largest brick monument
  • Sunrise blessing under the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree
  • Mihintale's 1,840 steps and mountain-top dagobas
  • Polonnaruwa's Gal Viharaya rock Buddhas at first light
  • Wild elephant sightings on the Minneriya reservoir drive
