Meridian Museum of Glass

Glass wants two things from architecture: precise shade and a reliable background. The museum is conceived as a series of grey concrete rooms around a central court, each tuned to a different quality of light — north, diffused, low and oblique — so the collection can be shown the way its makers saw it.

The workshop wing is public, separated from the galleries by a thin acoustic wall with windows at eye level. Visitors watch the makers; the makers work in borrowed daylight. The building itself is cast-in-place concrete with a sandblasted finish that reads soft from a distance and honest up close.

A decade of maintenance records shaped the detailing. Drainage is external, gutters are walkable, and every roof is a deck. The museum is designed to be loved by its staff, because buildings that are loved get kept.
