Harborview Pavilion

A competition entry for a public pavilion on the working waterfront — a roof, a deck, and nothing that gets in the way of the water.

The waterfront is the town\u2019s best room, and the pavilion is our proposal for its furniture. The programme is deliberately thin: a covered market space, public toilets, a stage, and a café with the best seat in the county.

The roof is the project. A single folded plane of steel, 40 metres across, cantilevered toward the water and shaped to shed the harbour wind. Below it, everything is open and movable — the market can be four stalls or forty.

The jury shortlist was announced in June; the winner is decided this winter. Either way, we have established what we believe the site wants: less building, more roof.

Four letters a year — one project in detail, one honest lesson from the ledger, and one building we think you should know about. No renders of things we haven't built.
