A ninety-eight square metre cabin that runs entirely off the sun and the stream, designed for a family that wanted to disconnect properly.

The cabin is deliberately small, because the site is the point. Ninety-eight square metres, one room deep, with a sleeping loft and a porch that doubles as an outdoor room for eight months of the year.
Power comes from a 5 kW array and a battery bank; heat from a single wood stove that also heats the water. The building is super-insulated to the point where the stove is almost too much — a problem the family reports enjoying.
The structure is post-and-beam fir, cut and milled within forty kilometres of the site. Windows are triple-glazed and sized to frame the valley rather than advertise it. In winter the cabin is a warm box in a white landscape; that is the entire brief, fulfilled.
