Designing for the awkward middle

Designing for the awkward middle

Every project has a week — sometimes three — when the work looks like a mistake. The type is too big, the colour is wrong, the client has gone quiet. This is the awkward middle, and it is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.

The middle is where the real decisions happen. The first version of an idea is usually the most confident and the most obvious; it takes a second and third pass to find the version that is quietly, specifically right. The mess is the process.

Our job in the middle is to keep the work moving and keep the client calm — to frame the mess as progress, share partial thoughts before they're pretty, and protect the team from the urge to start over.

Startovers are the expensive habit. The awkward middle, survived, is usually where the best work in the portfolio comes from. Ask any designer which project they're proudest of, and they'll point at the one that nearly killed them.
